Come and join celebrated folk clarinet quartet, The Tradinettes, for a day of clarinet
workshops focused on all things folk!
The day will include workshops for Bb clarinet and bass clarinet.
Eb clarinets/other clarinets also welcome (please let us know when you book).
This Workshop Day is aimed at players of Grade 5 level and up.*
*You should be comfortable playing a range of two octaves, over the break and playing in keys with up to four
sharps or flats. Although there will be a focus on learning by ear, sheet music will also be provided.
About the Tutors: The Tradinettes.
The Tradinettes bring the rich, expressive voice of the clarinet to the folk tradition. This unique ensemble of four celebrated musicians weaves together bass and Bb clarinets, with expertise ranging from Eastern European folk music to Irish trad. The musicians have a wealth of experience teaching and performing folk music, and you can find out more about them below!
Katie Stevens
Katie is an active musician on the UK festival circuit playing with Bonfire Radicals, The Destroyers and Filkin’s Ensemble. In 2022, she performed at the opening of the Commonwealth Games with The Destroyers. Katie has recently enjoyed recording projects with Michael McGoldrick, Tim Edey and more recently with Charlotte Church as a woodwind specialist on an upcoming release.
Dom O’Sullivan
Dom won a scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2017, and studied the full range of the woodwind family, including the Clarinet and Bass Clarinet. Dom performs with festival bands Juniper and Filkin's Ensemble, has collaborated with the London Musical Theatre Orchestra, and has created music for several contemporary dance and movement productions, including those featuring live improvised scores.
Kat Browning
Kat studied Bass Clarinet at Leeds Conservatoire, Bangor University and the Royal Northern College of Music and has three Music degrees to boot! Kat has performed at a number of prestigious venues on Bass Clarinet, including The Royal Albert Hall and The Kennedy Centre in the US. In addition to The Tradinettes, Kat has secured funding for a project exploring the role of the Bass Clarinet in traditional music from the UK and Ireland, with a number of exciting collaborations on the horizon, including with folk Trumpet player Neil Yates and Low Clarinet specialist Sarah Watts.
Helen Gentile
Helen plays Clarinet with festival bands Threepenny Bit, Monkey See Monkey Do and balfolk duo, Helen Gentile & Lewis Wood. With diverse interests from Irish trad to European balfolk, Helen is keen to put the Clarinet front and centre in all of her musical projects. She has recorded six albums to date; most recently, award-nominated album Violet Sky (Dec 2024) with fiddle player Lewis Wood (Granny’s Attic). Helen is also a published composer with two of her tunes published in Faber publication Folk Tunes from the Women (2022) curated by Kathryn Tickell.
